INTRODUCTION
SURABI- Strategic Urban Rural Advancement Backing Institute is a Voluntary, Non-profit and Non-governmental Organisation of Chennai Salesian Province. It is the central Project Office that coordinates the socio-economic, cultural and educational development in rural and urban slum areas. Help is given to all those in need irrespective of caste, creed or religion. This office attends to Formal and non formal academic and technical education, economic sustainability and empowerment of marginalized communities.
HISTORY
In the year 1988, Bro. Lourduraj Medabalimi sdb initiated the steps to establish a Development Project Office. His motive was to assist the province to realize the capacity building and the Developmental needs of the Province through Fund Raising, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting. Therefore a Provincial Team was formed in 1988 for this purpose. In 1992 DMOS COMIDE, Belgium paved the way for the formation of Development Offices in all Salesian Provinces of India for better collaboration. It was in 1993, during the time of Bro. Lobo sdb, the then provincial Economer, that the Centre for Province Project Department (CPPD) was started. The present SURABI office was opened on 14th February 2003 and directed by the following Salesians : Fr. Tarsicius Rathinasamy sdb, Fr. Patrick Joji sdb, Fr. Lawrence Soosai sdb. The current director is Fr. Mark Vellanganny sdb.
It has acquired FCRA, 80 G, PAN, TAN, 12AA of the INCOME TAX ACT, 1961.
FUNCTION
SURABI acts as a bridge between the JOYFUL GIVERS and the GRATEFUL RECEIVERS. It aims at synergy towards sustainability. At SURABI we are connecting the people of our concern with individual donors, benefactors, mission procures, development offices, funding agencies and corporate bodies within India and abroad
