Polur - Agro Tech
Don Bosco Ticino Farm, situated some 3 kilometres from the house, comprises 31 acres along the River Cheiyar. Recently, the Administrator has put in a lot of work clearing the land and sowing paddy, sugarcane and other crops. The house also has a farm of 7 acres on its premises with goats, cows, pigs and some cultivation. The produce of the farm supplements the income of the house.
The Codello Farm at Jawadhi Hills
Started by Fr. Codello in 1977, this was a model farm created by him in order to instruct the tribals in the art of farming and cattle rearing. Today the farm maintains the following:
A rice flour mill, a dairy farm with 10 cows, 3 bulls and 10 calves, honey processing centre, vermin compost, poultry, rabbit rearing and piggery, mattress and pillow making from silk cotton, and agricultural and vegetable farming. Six workers are employed in the farm, with a supervisor to coordinate the work.
The Codello Farm at Vyasarpadi
From June 2006, the farm is looked after by a lay person, under the direction of the Administrator. There are a few workers to look after the dairy farm, maintenance and other day to day activities.
Cultivation of crops without a proper compound wall is not profitable, for which a compound wall is a necessity and is being looked into. Plans are underway to increase the rearing of sheep and birds. The present orchard of mango trees is giving a good yield, and more of such trees as well as other fruit trees will be planted.
Agro Tech at Karaikal
The house owns 42 acres of prime farm land, on which the main crop cultivated is paddy because of the condition of the soil. Water is abundant. Machines are used harvesting. The local people are employed in the cultivation of the land and they are paid just wages. A Salesian Brother looks after the farm. All the agricultural requirements are provided by the Administrator of the community.
Two Bore Wells for the benefit of Farm at Sagayathottam
Don Bosco Mission, Sagayathottam, is situated in the district of Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India . This remote missionary area is located 100 kms away from the city of Chennai . It is 80 kms away from the city limits.
Today we have 500 catholic families spread into 12 villages. We have a school, which caters to the needs of the people in and around Sagayathottam, an Agricultural college, which caters to the needs of 100 youngsters, and a farm consisting of 200 acres, which assists the boarding and the house needs.
